Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. The parents of her did not want her to take on acting roles until she was older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry said that she was nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness caused Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were in demand. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway with her mother. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. Her father played her on the ABC Drama Scandal. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong familial connection to the character.
